Recommended Reading

This list of resources represent a tiny proportion of the books, DVDs and other material that is now available, however they appear on this list because we at Axis Yoga have found them particularly helpful, instructive or enlightening ( small 'e'). Please note, that books and DVDs are no substitute for instruction from a qualified teacher, and should be used as an aid to regular yoga classes.

John Scott is one of the most respected and inspiring advanced practitioners of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga. He is a direct and continuing student of Sri K Pattabhi Jois - the founder of this vastly popular approach to yoga. Anatomy of Hatha Yoga - David Coulter M.D.

Anatomy of Hatha YogaIn classes we are often told to bend forward with a flat back, pull the top hip back in triangles or breathe deeply using the abdomen. The trouble is, our teachers rarely explain why. Dr Coulter examines the physiology of asanas and explains in incredible detail the roles each part of our bodies play, and the effects that ensue.

Hatha Yoga Pradipika - Yogi Swatmarama. Commentary by Swami Muktibodhananda

Hatha Yoga PradipikaHatha is pronounced "Hat-ha" as there is no "th" sound in Sanskrit. For some reason, Hatha Yoga has developed an image of being soft or easy, and is sometimes associated with sitting in a room full of students heavy breathing. The truth however, could not be further from this. Hatha in Sanskrit has several meanings including "Force", "Violence", "Absolute or inevitable necessity" and "By all means".

The Hatha Yoga system was created with the knowledge that it is easier for a person to bring their body under control before tackling the harder task of controlling ones desires, thoughts and feelings. The "Light on Hatha Yoga" was put down on paper between the 6th and 15th centuries but the theory on which it is based can be seen in texts dating back to 6th century BCE.

This book provides a fantastic background to the science and natural philosophy behind the yoga practice. Beware, some of the practices described within are eye-watering, and should only be undertaken under expert guidance, but reading about them will do you no harm.

Power Yoga - Beryl Bender Birch

Power YogaBeryl Birch was one of the pioneers of the Ashtanga system in the US, however she was faced with a naming problem as no-one really knew what the word meant, so she named it Power Yoga instead. She has successfully incorporated Yoga practices into the training regimes of many of the US's top athletes and sports people. Her style is very warm and easy to read but at the same time she explains the asanas and the benefits of regular practice very clearly. If you are a sports person first, and a yogi second, this book is an absolute must read.
